A Case of Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of the Ear

Abstract
Fibrous histiocytoma is one of the many synonyms currently employed for a heterogenous group of tumors with the common cell of origin being the tissue histiocyte. This cell can act as a phagocyte or it can form connective thus forming as a facultative fibroblast.
Histiocytic tumors, while rare in and of themselves, have been recognized with increasing frequency in the head and neck literature. The majority of these lesions are apparently benign. However, criteria for the diagnosis of malignancy are confusing, often being based largely on clinical grounds.
A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma involving the ear canal is reported. Review of the literature reveals lack of uniformity of opinion regarding diagnostic criteria and best management.
